Mzuzu Police launch man hunt for murder suspect

Mzuzu, November 2: Police in Mzuzu are looking for Mazuwa Gondwe, 24, who is suspected to have killed a sister in law and a one-month old baby.

According to Deputy Public Relations Officer for Mzuzu Police, Sergeant Enala Kalua the suspect on Tuesday morning allegedly killed Mercy Nkhoma, 19, and Chawanangwa Gondwe.

Kalua said the suspect killed his sister in-law and the baby using an axe and immediately escaped, leaving the deceased unconscious.

She said the husband to Nkhoma and father to Gondwe, Temwa Gondwe who is a motorcycle taxi operator was out on duty when the incident took place.

Kalua said upon his arrival at home Gondwe found his brother coming out of a house with an axe and immediately shouted for help.

Once arrested he will be charged of an offence of murder which is contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code, Kalua said.

Postmortem conducted at Mzuzu Central Hospital confirmed that death of the baby was due to severe head injury as a result of an assault by a sharp object while the mother’s death was due to head injury and loss of blood secondary to damaged blood vessels on the neck.

Both the suspect, Gondwe and the deceased baby are of Dumisani Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Kampingo Sibande in Mzimba District.

Nkhoma was from Village Head Chatoloma in the area of TA Kaluluma in Kasungu.
