Police Commeny On Alleged Accidental Shooting In Lilongwe

Malawi Police Service have confirmed the arrest of a fellow police officer, Sub Inspector David Chitsike, in connection to the alleged accidental shooting of a 36-year-old fitness trainer, Chikondi Makawa, in Lilongwe.

National Police Public Relations Officer, Peter Kalaya, told MBC that once all the investigations are done they will update the nation.

“We are aware of the incident and at the moment we have placed the officer involved in the fracas in our custody, once all the investigations are done we will update the nation accordingly,” Kalaya said.

Information gathered indicates that the deceased asked for a bottle of water at the bar but did not pay for it.

The owner of the bar called for police support at Gateway Mall Police Unit, where the officer accidentally shot Makawa in the chest.

Meanwhile, the deceased family in Area 49 said they cannot comment on the matter as they are currently mourning.

“We will come back to you once we are done with the burial arrangements, at the moment there are a lot of versions on social media to which we cannot respond,” said a representative of the family.
