The 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has commenced at the UN Headquarters in New York City, United States of America.

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera will be among the 192 world leaders to hold discussions during the high level deliberative session which starts on 20 September 2022.

The assembly has reconvened physically after a break of two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Aside from the assembly which is the main deliberative organ, the president will hold bilateral and multilateral engagements with other world leaders and heads of international institutions aimed at promoting Malawi as a competitive investment destination in Africa and use the opportunity to consolidate various bilateral ties the country has.

Almost 40 high level meetings geared towards mobilising over a billion dollars in resources have been lined up in the President’s schedule of activities in New York.

Being held under the theme ‘’A watershed moment; transformative solutions to interlocking challenges,” certainly soaring global energy prices, food inflation, the general rise in cost of living, the war in Ukraine and other global challenges are issues to feature highly on the agenda of the assembly amidst global efforts to consolidate the gains made in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

It is expected that President Chakwera will address the assembly on 22 September 2022.
