A renowned legal expert, Garton Kamchedzera, has described the frequent amendments of laws in the country as an indication that legislators are failing to exercise their law-making duties effectively.
Kamchedzera made this observation at a time when the opposition party, DPP, is demanding a review of the new Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Act.
According to the DPP, the law, which recognizes National Identity Cards as the sole identification for voter registration, will hinder Malawians without the ID from casting their votes in next year’s polls.
However, the DPP’s move raises questions, considering its members of parliament were involved in passing the law.
Commenting on the developments, Kamchedzera, a law professor at the University of Malawi, faulted parliamentarians for making laws based on personal interests rather than the country’s.
He said frequent amendments of laws prevent the nation from benefiting from the regulations.
