The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has announced that it will not attend the United Democratic Front (UDF) national conference scheduled for this week in Blantyre, despite having received an official invitation.
According to a letter released today, signed by the party’s Secretary General, Richard Chimwendo Banda, the decision was made to avoid potential disruptions and violence that could be incited by some opposition elements seeking to create unrest.
The MCP further explained that this move is intended to help ensure that the conference, which is set to take place this Wednesday at Comesa Hall in Blantyre, proceeds smoothly and peacefully.
“We have carefully considered the invitation, but after assessing the situation, we believe it is in the best interest of all parties for us not to participate. This will allow the event to be conducted in a calm and orderly manner,” the statement read.
The UDF conference has garnered attention amid internal party conflicts and a broader political landscape in Malawi that continues to evolve as the nation approaches the next election cycle.
