The highly anticipated Tour de Dwangwa 2024 kicked off this morning, drawing over 200 professional cyclists from across the country to compete in the grueling 85-kilometer race.

The event, organized by charity grouping Round Table Dwangwa 69, aims to raise funds for underprivileged communities surrounding the Dwangwa Sugar Estate, with a specific target of K60 million for the construction of a fence at Nkhotakota Primary School.

The cyclists began their journey at Kande in Nkhata Bay South, pedaling their way to Chitowe Stadium in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota District, along the M5 road.

The competition is fierce, with K600,000 up for grabs for champions in each category, including men-drop hand, mountain bike, and ladies.

As the cyclists took to the road, the atmosphere was electric, with spectators cheering them on and waving flags.

The race’s popularity has grown significantly over the years, attracting both local and international cyclists.

“We are thrilled to see the increased participation this year,” said Round Table Dwangwa 69 Chairperson, George Mwale. “The Tour de Dwangwa has become a flagship event for us, and we’re grateful for the support from sponsors, cyclists, and the community.”

The event’s primary objective is to raise funds for charitable causes.

This year’s focus on constructing a fence at Nkhotakota Primary School is crucial, as it will provide a safe learning environment for over 2,000 students.

“The current fence is dilapidated, posing a significant risk to the students’ safety,” explained Mwale. “We’re determined to raise the necessary funds to build a new, secure fence, ensuring these children can focus on their education without worrying about their well-being.”

Cyclists competing in the event shared their excitement and anticipation.

“I’ve been training for months, and I’m confident I can win,” said seasoned cyclist, Chikondi Banda. “The competition is tough, but I’m ready for the challenge.”

First-time participant, Emily Nkhoma, echoed Banda’s sentiments. “I’m nervous but excited to be part of this amazing event. The cause is close to my heart, and I’m proud to contribute.”

As the cyclists crossed the finish line, the crowd erupted in cheers, congratulating the winners and commending all participants for their endurance and dedication.

The Tour de Dwangwa 2024 has once again demonstrated the power of sports in driving positive change.

With the funds raised, Round Table Dwangwa 69 will continue to make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.

The Tour de Dwangwa 2024 has set a new standard for charity events in Malawi, showcasing the potential for sports to drive social impact.

As the event continues to grow, one thing is certain – the winners are not just the cyclists, but the communities they’re supporting.
