United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi has emphasised that his calls for leadership and reform in Malawi are not intended to attack President Arthur Peter Mutharika, as some have interpreted.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Muluzi clarified that he holds the president in high regard and considers him a father figure.

“APM is our President, elected with a strong mandate to deliver for the people of Malawi,” said Muluzi.

He explained that as the leader of an opposition political party in a democratic Malawi, it is his duty and responsibility to speak out on issues affecting the nation and hold the government accountable where necessary, emphasising that this is not a personal attack, but rather the essence of democracy.

Muluzi recalled his recent meeting with Mutharika at his residence [Page House] in Mangochi in March 2025, describing it as cordial and fruitful.

“We discussed the future of our country, and my respect for him remains unchanged,” he said.

Muluzi reiterated that his focus is on contributing to the development of Malawi and building a better country for all citizens.

He urged those interpreting his words as personal attacks to understand the context of his statements, adding that his commitment to Malawi’s progress remains unwavering.
