Voter registration process underway in Machinga amid low turnout

By Burnett Munthali

As of 8:00 AM, the voter registration centers in Machinga have officially opened, with all personnel, including security officials, present and ready to assist. However, observations from various locations indicate that the number of individuals arriving to register remains low.

At the St. Theresa registration center in the town of Liwonde, we noted that the turnout has been significantly limited. Despite the lack of registrants, one young man, Mustafa Kaukonde, expressed his determination to register, stating that he wants to vote for leaders who truly represent the interests of his community. He also urged fellow youths in the area to take the initiative to register in larger numbers.

Meanwhile, some local officials overseeing the registration process assured us that the exercise is proceeding smoothly, with no major issues reported so far. They remain optimistic about increasing participation as the registration period continues.

While the current turnout is disappointing, the enthusiasm of young individuals like Kaukonde reflects a growing awareness of the importance of civic engagement and the need for community members to participate actively in the electoral process. As voter registration continues, local leaders hope to encourage more residents to make their voices heard by taking part in this essential democratic exercise.
