Government claims Kaliati remained silent during Police questioning; Kaphale calls it “laughable”

By Burnett Munthali

Lilongwe, Malawi — The government has reported that UTM Secretary General Patricia Kaliati stayed silent during police questioning while in detention. According to officials, Kaliati chose not to respond to questions posed by investigators, leading authorities to argue that she should not be released from police custody.

In response, Kaliati’s lead attorney, Dr. Kalekeni Kaphale, dismissed the government’s statement, labeling it “laughable.” He suggested that the silence observed during questioning should not be used to justify extended detention and that Kaliati’s legal rights, including the right to remain silent, must be respected.

This development adds a new twist to the high-profile case, as Kaliati is currently facing a conspiracy charge related to an alleged plot against President Lazarus Chakwera. Her legal team, which includes prominent lawyers, continues to prepare for upcoming court appearances as the public awaits further updates on the proceedings.
