By Burnett Munthali

This morning, United Transformation Movement (UTM) supporters gathered in large numbers in Lilongwe to accompany Newton Kambala as he submitted his candidacy for the party’s top leadership position. The enthusiastic crowd, dressed in UTM colors, marched from Area 18 Freedom Park, heading towards the party’s headquarters in Area 10.

The UTM is scheduled to hold its much-anticipated convention later this month, where delegates from across the country will elect new leaders. The convention is seen as a critical milestone for the party as it prepares for Malawi’s upcoming general elections. The contest for party president is particularly high-stakes, as the winner will lead UTM’s electoral campaign and shape its political direction.

Newton Kambala joins a lineup of influential figures vying for the party presidency, including Patricia Kaliati, Mathews Mtumbuka, and Dalitso Kabambe, who have already submitted their candidacy letters. Each candidate brings unique experience and vision, and their campaigns are gaining attention among UTM supporters and the general public alike.

Supporters of Kambala see his candidacy as a promising choice for the party’s future, and today’s march was a demonstration of the strong backing he has within UTM. As the convention approaches, each candidate’s strategy and message will play a crucial role in winning delegates’ support and ultimately guiding UTM’s direction.

The upcoming convention is widely regarded as a key event in Malawi’s political calendar, with UTM positioning itself as a strong contender. The party’s emphasis on transparency, inclusivity, and internal democracy has set a high bar for other political movements in the country, and the convention outcome will signal the party’s vision for the nation’s future.

As UTM supporters march with energy and optimism, the focus remains on electing a leader who will not only strengthen the party but also represent the aspirations of Malawians seeking change and development.
