Concerned Citizens urge government to rethink K2.7 billion monument project for Gwanda Chakuamba

By Burnett Munthali

The Gulu la Concerned Citizens of Malawi has called on the government to reconsider its proposal to use K2.7 billion for the construction of a monument dedicated to the late Gwanda Chakuamba. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Local Government and Cultural Affairs, aims to honor Chakuamba’s significant contributions to the nation by building the memorial in Nsanje District.

In a letter addressed to government officials, prominent members of the group, Edward Kambanje and Oliver Nakoma, emphasized the need for the government to reevaluate this initiative in light of the pressing challenges currently faced by the populace.

According to the group, Malawians are grappling with numerous issues, including food shortages, fuel scarcity, and inadequate access to government healthcare services. They argued that while honoring Chakuamba’s legacy is important, it should not come at the expense of addressing the immediate needs of citizens.

“We can remember those who have contributed positively to this country without forgetting the problems people are currently facing. A government that fails to prioritize the needs of its citizens is, in essence, a failing government,” the letter stated.

Gwanda Chakuamba, who passed away in 2016, held various leadership roles within different political parties, including the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). He also founded and led the Republican Party (RP) and the New Republican Party (NRP).

The Concerned Citizens of Malawi’s plea highlights the ongoing debate about the allocation of government resources in a country where many struggle to meet basic needs. As the government moves forward with its plans, the voices of citizens urging for a more balanced approach will be crucial in shaping the future of national priorities.
