Afford Party Alleges MCP Involvement in Violence

Afford Party leader, Enock Chihana, has publicly condemned the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) for allegedly using youths to perpetrate violence and disrupt democratic processes.

Speaking during press briefing in Lilongwe on Wednesday, AFFORD incumbent President, Enock Chihana raised concerns such as disruption of democratic processes, intimidation of opposition parties and violence perpetrated by MCP youths.

In her reaction, Malawi Congress Party-MCP spokesperson, Jessie Kabwira, denies the allegations, calling for concrete evidence to support Afford Party’s claims.

Kabwira says MCP condemns violence and promotes peaceful coexistence.

She said: “Allegations are baseless and unfounded. Afford Party should provide substantial proof.”

Commenting on the matter, good governance expert, Undule Mwakasungulu the has urged Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to take decisive action against any party or individual promoting violence or disrupting the democratic process.

The allegations come amidst rising tensions ahead of the 2025 general elections. The Afford Party has vowed to promote peaceful and democratic practices, while the MCP has maintained its commitment to upholding the rule of law.
