The National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) has highlighted agricultural biotechnology as a potential solution to Malawi’s ongoing farming challenges.
Speaking during the 2024 Open Forum on Agriculture Biotechnology (OFAB) Malawi Chapter Media Awards in Salima, Yohane Chimbalanga, Senior Research Officer for Agriculture and Natural Resources at NCST, stressed the importance of adopting biotechnology to improve agricultural productivity and resilience.
Chimbalanga pointed out the critical role journalists play in bridging the gap between scientists and the public.
“Journalists are key information drivers who can effectively communicate the technologies being developed by scientists to end users,” he stated, urging members of the media to collaborate closely with researchers to enhance public understanding and acceptance of biotechnology.
The ceremony also celebrated excellence in biotechnology reporting, with Khama Majamanda from Chisomo Regional Radio Station emerging as the winner in the radio category for his contributions to raising awareness of agricultural biotechnology.
Chimbalanga emphasized that biotechnology offers innovative solutions to issues such as low crop yields, pest infestations, and the effects of climate change. He called for greater collaboration among scientists, policymakers, and journalists to ensure that farmers are equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools to improve productivity and food security.
The OFAB awards underscored the importance of accurate and impactful reporting in fostering widespread acceptance of science-driven agricultural advancements in Malawi.
