MCP Urges Calm as Jessie Kabwila Calls for Patience on Malawi Election Results

Lilongwe, Malawi — Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson Jessie Kabwila has appealed for calm among the public and party supporters as unofficial results from Tuesday’s general elections continue to circulate on social media and other platforms.

Speaking at MCP headquarters in Lilongwe, Kabwila emphasized that the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) remains the only legally mandated body to announce official election results.

“We will act in line with the country’s laws. MEC has yet to release the official results, so we will wait for them,” Kabwila told reporters.

Despite urging patience, Kabwila expressed confidence that MCP will emerge victorious, stating that the party had delivered on the priorities Malawians demanded.

Unofficial Results Stir Debate

Across Malawi, various unofficial tallies have been shared online, sparking debates and uncertainty. Kabwila remained non-committal on the sources of MCP’s projections, but reiterated that the party is fully prepared to respect the official announcement process.

MEC as the Sole Authority

The Malawi Electoral Commission has repeatedly reminded Malawians that it alone has the mandate to declare election results. Analysts warn that the spread of unofficial tallies could mislead the public and potentially cause tension if not handled responsibly.

Call for Peace and Unity

Kabwila’s remarks align with calls from civil society groups urging political parties to exercise restraint and encourage their supporters to remain peaceful until MEC completes its official verification process.

Looking Ahead

As the nation awaits the MEC’s official declaration, Kabwila said the Malawi Congress Party is focused on safeguarding democracy and respecting the rule of law, while maintaining optimism about securing electoral victory.
