Bennex Mwamlima, the former Member of Parliament for Mzuzu City Constituency, has graciously conceded defeat to William Chikweta Kaweche, an independent candidate who won the Mzuzu City South East Constituency seat.
Mwamlima, who represented the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), garnered 5,295 votes, while Kaweche secured 7,946 votes, marking a decisive win for the independent candidate.
In a show of goodwill and commitment to the constituency’s development, Mwamlima pledged to support Kaweche, emphasising the need for continuity in development projects.
“Elections have gone and winners won. People chose leaders of their choice. I have accepted defeat. Now is the time for development,” Mwamlima said.
Kaweche welcomed Mwamlima’s gesture, describing him as a patriot who genuinely cares about the area’s progress.
“I welcome his move. This shows that [Honourable ] Mwamlima wishes the people of Mzuzu City South East Constituency well and he really wants the area to develop for the betterment of the residents living in,” Kaweche stated.
Some of the key development projects in the constituency include
the construction of a school block at Msongwe School, development of Chipambo Football Ground, Geisha Clinic, Mzuzu Civic offices and Mzuzu Youth Centre.
Mwamlima has handed over records for these projects to Kaweche, ensuring a smooth transition.
