The United States has welcomed the establishment of the American Chamber of Commerce in Malawi, describing it as a significant new chapter in strengthening trade, investment and economic cooperation between Malawi and the United States.
Speaking during the launch in Blantyre on Tuesday, US Chargé d’Affaires Melania Arreaga said the new chamber would provide an important platform for American and Malawian businesses to deepen commercial partnerships and explore investment opportunities.
Arreaga said the administration of US President Donald Trump remains focused on supporting American businesses as they compete in international markets.
“President Trump has been clear: the US is putting America first. Putting America first means backing American businesses when they compete around the world,” Arreaga said.
She said the US administration places significant importance on the private sector, describing it as a key driver of economic prosperity both in the United States and in countries with which it partners.
US targets Malawi’s mining potential
Arreaga singled out Malawi’s mining sector as an area with potential to attract increased American investment, particularly because of the country’s critical mineral resources.
“Take mining. Malawi holds enormous potential to strengthen the US critical mineral supply chains and reduce our dependence on adversaries for resources that power our economies and our security,” she said.
Arreaga added that the United States expects to see growing American investment in Malawi’s mining industry.
The remarks come as Malawi seeks to attract more investment into its mining sector, which the government has identified as a potential major contributor to economic growth, exports and foreign exchange earnings.
Business leaders welcome new chamber
The launch has also been welcomed by leaders of Malawi’s private sector, who said the American Chamber of Commerce could help create new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) Chief Executive Officer Daisy Kambalame said the establishment of the chamber would strengthen business partnerships and encourage increased investment.
NICO Group Chief Executive Officer Vizenge Kumwenda also welcomed the initiative, saying stronger links between American and Malawian businesses could help unlock new commercial opportunities.
The American Chamber of Commerce in Malawi is expected to serve as a platform for businesses to build networks, identify investment opportunities and strengthen trade relations between the two countries.
For Malawi, increased US investment could provide opportunities for capital mobilisation, technology transfer, job creation and expansion of the country’s export base, particularly in sectors such as mining, energy, agriculture and manufacturing.
The launch therefore marks a potentially important development in Malawi-US economic relations, with both countries looking to deepen private-sector cooperation and expand investment opportunities.
Malawi Freedom Network will continue to follow developments on American investment, Malawi’s mining sector and the growing economic relationship between Malawi and the United States.
