In a dramatic twist to the post-election tension, police on Thursday stormed the Area 47 home of Vitumbiko Mumba, the running mate to former President Lazarus Chakwera in the disputed 16 September elections, and placed him under arrest.
Sources indicate that officers arrived with a search warrant issued by the Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate Court, before conducting a sweep of the property in Sector 1. The operation, which unfolded in full view of shocked neighbours, has sparked fresh questions about the ongoing crackdown on opposition figures and the mounting pressure surrounding the aftermath of the elections.
At this stage, the exact grounds for Mumba’s arrest remain unclear, with authorities offering no official explanation. However, insiders suggest the detention may be linked to the controversial remarks he made during a post-election press briefing—comments that the ruling establishment claimed incited public mistrust in the electoral process.
Mumba has since been moved to Lingadzi Police Station, where he is being held as investigations continue.
This is a developing story.
