Millions of Muslims from across the globe have today started the holy Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, marking one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings.

Saudi authorities say this year’s turnout is significantly higher compared to last year despite continued tensions and conflicts affecting parts of the Middle East.

Among the pilgrims are 105 Malawians who travelled to Saudi Arabia to fulfill one of Islam’s most important religious obligations. Security and health authorities in Saudi Arabia have intensified preparations to ensure the safety and smooth movement of millions of worshippers during the pilgrimage season.
