In a major relief to motorists, businesses, and households across Malawi, the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has announced significant reductions in the retail prices of petrol, diesel, and paraffin (kerosene), effective 00:00 hours on June 19, 2026.

According to a statement released by MERA Board Chairperson Lucas Kondowe, the price adjustments follow a decline in international fuel costs and reduced importation expenses recorded since the last fuel price review conducted on May 8, 2026.Mwanamvekha Hails World Bank’s Nathan Belete for Transformative Support to Malawi Development Projects

The biggest reduction has been recorded in kerosene prices, which have fallen by more than 16 percent, while petrol has dropped by nearly 10 percent.

Why Have Prices Been Reduced?

MERA says the decision was made after reviewing recommendations from its Energy Pricing Committee (EPC). Under Malawi’s Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM), the reductions exceeded the required trigger threshold, making a downward price adjustment necessary.

Relief for Consumers

The development is expected to ease transportation costs and provide some relief to consumers who have been struggling with the high cost of living. MERA has reminded all fuel retailers that they are legally required to sell petroleum products at prices that do not exceed the newly approved maximum pump prices.

Middle East Conflict Still a Concern

Despite the reductions, MERA has warned that ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to affect global petroleum markets and supply chains.
