Prophet Shepherd Bushiri Steps Up Repatriation Efforts for Stranded Malawians
LILONGWE – Prophet Shepherd Bushiri of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Church has intensified efforts to assist Malawians stranded in South Africa by deploying additional buses to transport them back home.HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Shepherd Bushiri – A life of impact, faith and generosity
The initiative comes amid growing concerns over the welfare of Malawian nationals affected by unrest and difficult living conditions in parts of South Africa. According to Bushiri, several buses have already departed from Johannesburg and are heading to Pietermaritzburg, one of the areas identified as requiring urgent assistance.
Bushiri said the decision followed a request from Malawi’s diplomatic mission in South Africa, which has been coordinating repatriation efforts for affected citizens.
“I would like to thank the government through the High Commission for the cooperation and commitment shown as we coordinate these efforts,” Bushiri said.
Humanitarian Support Beyond Transportation
Apart from providing transport, Bushiri revealed that his organisation is also arranging medical supplies and health support services for Malawians currently staying in temporary shelters.
He emphasized that the goal is not merely to facilitate their return but to ensure they travel safely and arrive home in good health.
“Our desire is not only to bring Malawians back home. We want them to return healthy and receive the care they deserve,” he explained.Bushiri Donates K15 Million to Boost Southern Region Press Club Cooperative
The humanitarian intervention has been welcomed by many Malawians who view it as a significant contribution during a challenging period for citizens living abroad.
Challenges in Expanding the Operation
Bushiri acknowledged that increasing the number of buses remains difficult due to foreign currency shortages, which have complicated payments to transport operators.
Despite these challenges, he said discussions are ongoing with banks and relevant stakeholders to secure the resources necessary for the continued transportation of Malawians back to their homeland.
The ECG founder expressed optimism that more buses would soon be added to the operation as funding arrangements improve.

Meanwhile, the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) has estimated that approximately K24.6 billion is required to facilitate the broader repatriation exercise and provide support to affected citizens.
A Call for National Unity
Bushiri has called on government institutions, private organisations, churches, businesses, and well-wishers to work together in supporting vulnerable Malawians during the crisis.
As repatriation efforts continue, the collaboration between humanitarian organisations, government agencies, and community leaders is expected to play a critical role in ensuring that affected citizens receive the assistance they need.Bushiri Applauds Mutharika’s Visionary Address, Calls It Clear, Action-Oriented and Hope-Giving
