President Mutharika Hails China as Xi Jinping Sends Personal Birthday Letter and Gift

LILONGWE, Malawi — President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has commended the People’s Republic of China for its unwavering support to Malawi’s development, describing the partnership between the two countries as one that continues to deliver tangible benefits in education, infrastructure, healthcare and the wider economy.

The President made the remarks at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe after receiving a personal birthday letter and a special gift from Chinese President Xi Jinping as he celebrated his birthday.

The gift, a professionally crafted portrait of President Mutharika accompanied by a handwritten message from President Xi, was formally presented by China’s Ambassador to Malawi, Lu Xu, during a ceremony attended by senior government officials and members of the diplomatic community.China-Malawi Media Deal to Strengthen Cultural Ties and Public Awareness

The symbolic gesture underscored the strong diplomatic ties that have continued to grow between Malawi and China over the years, with both countries maintaining close cooperation in economic development, infrastructure investment, education and health programmes.

Presenting the gift, Ambassador Lu Xu said she had been instructed by President Xi Jinping to personally deliver the message of congratulations and the commemorative portrait to President Mutharika.

She explained that the gift represented the Chinese President’s personal respect and admiration for President Mutharika while also reflecting the enduring friendship shared between the governments and people of Malawi and China.

“By instruction of my President, I present to Your Excellency his personal letter of felicitation on the occasion of your birthday, together with a modest gift as a token of the warm esteem and affectionate regard in which you are held both by my President and by the people of my own country,” Ambassador Lu said.

She further stated that President Xi hopes the gift will serve as a lasting symbol of China’s sincere goodwill toward President Mutharika and the deep-rooted friendship that continues to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations.

Receiving the gift, President Mutharika expressed surprise and gratitude, describing the gesture as a great honour that extended beyond himself to the people of Malawi.

“I’m really flattered by this. I never expected it,” President Mutharika said.

“I want to extend my most sincere appreciation to His Excellency President Xi Jinping, my colleague and dear friend. It’s not only a gift to me, but also a gift to the people of Malawi.”

The President also praised China for remaining one of Malawi’s key development partners through continued investments and cooperation across several priority sectors.

“We have a very good cordial relationship, and we appreciate all the support that China is giving to us in education, infrastructure, health and various aspects of the economy,” he said.

China has played a significant role in supporting Malawi’s national development agenda through the construction of major public infrastructure, assistance to health institutions, educational cooperation, agricultural development projects and technical exchanges.

Over the years, the two countries have expanded collaboration in trade, investment, technology transfer and capacity building, with Chinese-funded projects contributing to improved public services and economic growth across Malawi.

Diplomatic observers say the exchange of personal messages between the two Heads of State demonstrates the growing political trust and mutual respect that characterise Malawi-China relations.

The latest gesture from President Xi Jinping is also seen as reinforcing Beijing’s commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic engagement with Malawi while encouraging further cooperation in areas that support sustainable development.

Analysts note that as Malawi continues pursuing economic transformation and infrastructure expansion, partnerships with international allies such as China remain important in mobilising investment and technical expertise.
