BLANTYRE — Malawi’s economic difficulties should not be viewed only as a crisis but also as an opportunity for innovation, entrepreneurship and wealth creation, Sycamore Consult Limited Managing Director Audrey Mwala has said.

Mwala made the remarks at the seventh Wealth Creation Conference in Blantyre, held under the theme “Opportunity in the Storm.”

Her message comes at a time when Malawians are grappling with foreign exchange shortages, rising prices and a challenging business environment, conditions that have placed increasing pressure on households and businesses.

However, she challenged Malawians to change the way they look at the prevailing economic difficulties, arguing that some of the problems facing the country could become opportunities for people willing to develop solutions.

“We want to view the storm as a stepping stone and an opportunity to benefit by identifying the issues around us and offering solutions,” Mwala said.

Mwala said complaining about economic challenges alone would not change the situation.

She said entrepreneurs should pay close attention to problems affecting communities and consider how those challenges could be transformed into sustainable businesses.

The objective, she explained, should not simply be to establish businesses for personal financial gain, but to build enterprises that solve real problems while creating wealth and employment.

Mwala’s message was built around the idea that economic hardship can expose gaps in the market that innovative entrepreneurs can fill.

She encouraged aspiring and existing business owners to look beyond the immediate difficulties and identify products, services and solutions that people continue to need despite the economic downturn.
