Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu has announced plans to begin a hunger strike on Monday, protesting prison authorities’ alleged refusal to allow him private access to his lawyers despite a court order.
Lissu, the leader of CHADEMA, has been in detention for more than 18 months facing a treason charge that carries a possible death sentence. He is awaiting a final ruling scheduled for November 6.
According to his lawyer, Lissu intends to stop taking both food and medication as part of his protest, insisting that his fight is for the rule of law.
