Social media contributor Buthelezi Ellerton Gamah, has claimed that a lecturer at a public university is not a public servant arguing that the courts have said so countless times from the Nseula and Kachere cases in the 1990s to the Kabwila, Chisi, Safuli, and Ngwale cases of 2014.

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera rescinded his decision of appointing a DPP nominee Mayamiko Nkoloma as Commissioner of the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) on the argument that he is a public servant working at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) in the Telecommunication Department.

The DPP has argued that there is nowhere in the Republican Constitution or Mec Act a provision that disqualifies professionals from being appointed to serve in public institutions claiming that its nominee Nkoloma is fully qualified to serve as its Commissioner at the Electoral body.

“Let Mayamiko Nkoloma assume his position at Mec without delay, there is no law to broke him from being appointed Mec Commissioner,” reads Buthelezi Gamah’s writing on the wall.

Reacting to Nkoloma’s rejection by President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, a concerned citizen of Malawi from Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has advised President Chakwera to let the DPP nominee assume his duties at Mec.

Kamphangala said already some people are speculating unfounded news that Nkoloma being an ICT expert is being feared by the MCP that he will tamper with the Smartmattic machines which Mec is planning to transmit results of election figures from constituency tally centres to the main tally centre in Lilongwe.

He has reminded President Chakwera that at first, he approved he Nkoloma’s name and two days later, he rescinded his decision not to appoint him as Mec Commissioner observing that his u- turn is very suspicious not only to the DPP but Malawians in general.

The citizen has asked President Chakwera to find another reason in Nkoloma of rejecting him other than that of being a public servant arguing that Mec Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja is a public servant and at the same time Mec Chairperson.

Kamphangala has asked President Chakwera to address the nation on the reasons he has rescinded his decision of appointing Nkoloma as Mec Commissioner so that all Malawians get first- hand information from him being the First Citizen of the country.

“Two DPP nominees as Mec Commissioner have been rejected by President Chakwera, the appointing authority, what picture are you portraying to the nation especially now that the country is preparing for the 16th September, 2025 elections? Questioned Kamphangala.

He has faulted President Chakwera’s advisors for not advising him in good faith claiming that indecisive leadership in Chakwera is coming because of listening to wrong advices saying this has made millions of Malawians to lose trust in him as their president.
