David Mbewe, leader of the Liberation for Economic Freedom party, has called for urgent action to address Malawi’s food crisis during a rally held in Ndirande, Blantyre. Opening his address, Mbewe paid tribute to those who tragically lost their lives due to hunger, acknowledging the hardships many Malawians continue to face amid food shortages and economic struggles.
At the rally, Mbewe led the crowd in observing a minute of silence in honor of individuals who died last week after receiving maize distributed as aid. These individuals reportedly passed away while returning from a distribution center, highlighting the severity of the ongoing food crisis.
Mbewe emphasized that his party is committed to ensuring that every Malawian has access to essential resources, including food. He urged the country’s leadership to prioritize the needs of the poor and vulnerable, pointing out that hunger and economic hardship are taking a heavy toll on the nation.

“Our mission is to guarantee that no Malawian goes to bed hungry, and we must ensure that the leadership in this country puts the people first, especially those who are suffering the most,” Mbewe stated.
The rally in Ndirande is part of the Liberation for Economic Freedom party’s broader campaign to raise awareness about Malawi’s growing food insecurity and advocate for stronger economic policies. Mbewe stressed that addressing poverty and food shortages must be a national priority if the country is to overcome the challenges it currently faces.
