The Minister of Finance, Honourable Joseph Mwanamvekha, has reaffirmed government’s strong commitment to placing young people at the centre of Malawi’s development agenda, describing youth engagement as a key pillar of national economic transformation.
Speaking during a Ministerial Youth Pre-Budget Consultation, Mwanamvekha said the ongoing dialogue with young people is clear evidence that the government of President Mutharika is not only willing to listen, but is ready to act on ideas generated by the youth. He emphasized that the voices of young Malawians are critical in shaping a responsive and inclusive national budget.
“The future of this country depends on how we empower our youth today,” Mwanamvekha said, adding that government policies are deliberately designed to remove barriers that have historically limited youth participation in education, business, and talent development.
As part of this commitment, the government has introduced free secondary education, a landmark reform aimed at expanding access to education and equipping young people with the skills required to drive economic growth.
Further demonstrating its pro-youth agenda, the DPP government has allocated K100 million per constituency annually to support youth-led enterprises. The funds are structured to provide accessible loans, enabling young entrepreneurs to start and grow small-scale businesses, create jobs, and contribute meaningfully to local economies.
In addition, Mwanamvekha announced that government has set aside K50 million per constituency dedicated to youth sports development. The initiative is expected to nurture talent, promote healthy lifestyles, and open pathways for young people to earn livelihoods through sports.
He noted that under the leadership of Arthur Peter Mutharika, the DPP government remains resolute in building an economy that works for the youth—one that invests in education, enterprise, and talent as engines of sustainable development.
The consultations form part of broader efforts to ensure that the 2026–2027 National Budget reflects the aspirations of young Malawians and positions them as partners, innovators, and drivers of Malawi’s economic future.
