Government Sorry For National ID’s Mess

By Suleman Chitera Jul14,2022

Principal Secretary for National Registration Bureau in the Homeland Security Ministry, Mphatso Sambo has apologized over prolonged delays and struggles they are going through in renewing expired national Identity Cards and processing new ones.

He decries the situation during a District Executive Committee – DEC meeting in Dowa on Wednesday; describing the incidents as unfortunate and that authorities are working to rectify this.

Sambo further admits the mishaps occurred because the National Registration and Identification project carried out mass registration which their gadgets could not handle.

“In 2021, over 3 million cards were already expired and our computers could not manage to print and then distribute later to the citizens since we are using medium-sized printers,” explains Sambo.

Meanwhile, National Registration Bureau reveals it has now introduced other strategies including the hiring of new staff and procurement of more printers to be working 24 hours.

Several people Rainbow has talked to have not hidden their frustrations over the torture, long-wait and embarrassment they continue through to renew their expired national ID’s.
