Richard Chimwendo Banda, Secretary General of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has been sent to Maula Prison pending a court ruling on his bail application.
Chimwendo Banda is facing attempted murder charges, with the case still ongoing. His lawyer, George Jivasoni Kadzipatike, confirmed that despite being unwell, Chimwendo Banda was discharged from hospital and remanded in prison.
The court decision came after a hearing last week, with the judge ordering Chimwendo Banda’s detention pending further proceedings. Kadzipatike expressed concern over his client’s health, citing inadequate medical care in custody.
The MCP leader’s imprisonment has sparked debate, with supporters questioning the fairness of the judicial process. The case has drawn significant attention, with many awaiting the court’s decision on Chimwendo Banda’s bail application.
