Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Honorable Dr. Kondwani Nankhumwa is describing the tombstone of late Senior Chief Mponda I he is constructing in Mangochi district as a testament to the values and principles that had guided the late chief throughout his life.

Nankhumwa made a commitment to construct a descent tombstone for the fallen chief when he visited Mponda Headquarters in Mangochi in December last year, to condole the family following the death of Senior Chief Mponda IIII.

Four months down the line, the construction of the tombstone is nearing completion and Nankhumwa, who also serves as Democratic Progressive Party-DPP Vice President for the South, on Saturday, 5th May 2023, visited the district to appreciate the works.

“I’m delighted to see the progress of the works. As I said when I came here early this year, Mponda chieftaincy has a “rich history” as it is closely associated with the introduction of Christianity in Malawi despite this area being predominantly Muslim. It is that spirit of tolerance that triggered me to do something for this family,” said Nankhumwa.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Group Village Headman Malunda, who is the acting Senior Chief Mponda, has hailed Nankhumwa for fulfilling his promise to construct the tombstone, saying it is a huge contribution that will forever impact their chieftaincy.

Nankhumwa was accompanied on the trip by among other dignitaries, party officials and Members of Parliament that include Joyce Chitsulo of Mwanza West Constituency and Getrude Nankhumwa of Blantyre Kabula
