Police Arrest Twi For Selling Counterfeit Fertiliser

Police in Lilongwe have arrested two men for allegedly been found in possession and offering for sale 56 bags of counterfeit NPK fertilizer.

Hastings Chigalu who speaks for the police station, has identified the two as Christine Kammayani, 43, and Mathias Bonongwe, 31.

“Police pounced on the suspects following a tip from a certain farmer from Dedza whom was duped cash amounting to K830,000 after he was offered 16 bags of the said fertilizer weighing 50 kilogrammes each,” said Chigalu.

It is reported that the farmer discovered the fertilizer was a counterfeit when applying in his field.

Meanwhile, police have since managed to seize 40 other bags from the suspects’ warehouse and the K810,000 the farmer paid for the counterfeit commodity.

Kammayani, who hails from William Village, Traditional Authority Kachere, Dedza, and his colleague, Bonongwe from Kamaleka Village, Traditional Authority Chilowamatambe in Kasungu District are expected to appear before the court soon .
