Silver Strikers Ladies’ historic run in the CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA Qualifier has come to an end after a narrow 2-1 defeat to ZESCO Ndola Girls on Friday.
The Malawian side put up a determined fight in the semifinal but could not find the result needed to book a place in the final of the regional competition.
Carolyn Mathyola scored Silver Strikers Ladies’ only goal of the match, converting a rebound as the team tried to fight their way back into the contest.
However, ZESCO Ndola Girls held on to their advantage to secure a place in the final, while Silver Strikers Ladies were left to battle for third place.
Despite the disappointment, Silver Strikers’ campaign has been historic, with the team reaching the CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA Qualifier semifinals on their first appearance in the competition.
Kulemeka proud despite defeat
Silver Strikers Ladies coach Patricio Kulemeka admitted that he was unhappy with the result but acknowledged the significance of the team’s achievement.
Kulemeka said the players had worked hard throughout the tournament and deserved credit for reaching the semifinal stage despite this being their first experience at this level.
The coach urged his players to take the lessons from the campaign and use the experience to improve in future editions of the CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers.
Silver Strikers face third-place playoff
Silver Strikers Ladies will have another opportunity to finish their historic campaign on a high when they return to action on Saturday.
They will face the loser of the other semifinal between Mamelodi Sundowns and Gaborone United FC in the third-place playoff.
A victory would give the Malawian champions a bronze-medal finish and provide a positive ending to an impressive debut campaign.
A historic first appearance
Although Silver Strikers Ladies fell short of reaching the final, their run to the semifinals represents a major milestone for the club and Malawian women’s football.
Their performance has provided valuable international experience for the players and coaching staff, while demonstrating the growing competitiveness of women’s football in Malawi.
The team will now turn its attention to Saturday’s third-place playoff, hoping to finish its CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA Qualifier campaign with a victory.
Silver Strikers Ladies may have missed out on the final, but their historic semifinal appearance has laid an important foundation for future success on the continental stage.
