Delays to remove accumulated sand in a drainage system at the Nsanje Boma new market has irked over 100 vendors who are accusing authorities of ignoring the prevailing problem; a situation they say is negatively affecting their operations.
One of the vendors describes the situation as sad; questioning the authorities’ silence despite their daily market fees payments to correct such problems, among others.
Each vendor pays K250; translating to over K25 000 per day, K175 000 a week and K700 000 a month. In a year, authorities collect over K8.4 million.
“They are doing nothing on the water ways around the Boma. The council is aware of the development but they are just observing,” she says.
Nsanje District Council Chairperson, Rose Makiyi acknowledges the challenge but says they are doing something about it.
She reveals they already identified a contractor and anytime the construction works will start.
“We are equally concerned with the rains which usually cause havoc around the Boma,” explains Makiyi.
Previously, a full council meeting revealed setting aside K22 million to fix the drainage system at Nsanje Boma.
