Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have expressed interest to take part in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederation Cup having won the Airtel Top 8.
The clubâs president Thomson Mpinganjira, who doubles as board chairperson, said in an interview yesterday that they will court their sponsors Mukuru on the prospects of joining the continental showpiece.
He said: âParticipation in such tournaments has to be earned, as such, we had to wait until the Airtel Top 8 final.
âNow, the next step is, of course, to court our sponsors. We shall have discussions with them to see if that is possible.
âWe shall endeavour to participate, but at this stage, we will look at the numbers. It will be a great exposure for us all, including Mukuru across the continent.
âWe will actively pursue this.â
The business mogul and philanthropist also said on recommendation from the technical panel, they have already bought five players to strengthen the team.
The five include midfielder Mphatso Kamanga from Karonga United and striker Christopher Kumwembe from Civil Service United.
Mpinganjira said they are also hoping to complete a big signing by today.
While he could not be drawn to disclose his identity, The Nation has established that the Nomads are eyeing Blue Eagles marksman Gaddie Chirwa.
Mpinganjira said after beefing up the squad, they expect the team to win the Super League title and at least two cups next season.
âWe expect nothing less than the championship and nothing short of two trophies,â said Mpinganjira.
Football Association of Malawi club licencing and compliance manager Casper Jangale yesterday said in an interview having won the Airtel Cup, the Nomads are eligible for the CAF Confederation Cup.
âTo that effect, we will be waiting to hear from them,â he said.
The development means that Blue Eagles, who also expressed interest to join the tournament, will be on stand-by.
âIf [Nyasa Big] Bullets choose to join the CAF Champions League by virtue of being TNM Super League champions and Wanderers proceed to participate in the CAF Confederation Cup, then other interested clubs will be on the waiting list as we are entitled to those two slots,â said Jangale.
Reacting to the targets set by the board, Nomads head coach mark Harrison said: âIt is doable, but we do not have to rise our expectations too high and too quickly.
âWe have to realise that we are going through a transition and there are no guarantees in football.
