Police in Dowa Arrest Five Men for Allegedly Stealing and Vandalizing ESCOM Property

Police in Dowa District have arrested five men suspected of stealing and vandalizing equipment belonging to the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM).

Dowa Police Station spokesperson Alice Sitima stated that the incident occurred in Besera Village, near the Dzaleka Refugee Camp in the same district.

The suspects have been identified as Yamikani Thambo, Mayamiko Batani, Emmanuel Banda, Mustafa Machemba, and Chikumbutso Lameck.

According to Sitima, the arrests were made following reports from concerned community members.

“The suspects confessed to stealing and vandalizing transformers located at Namwiri, Besera, and Mtengowanthenga,” Sitima said.

The five men are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of theft and destruction of property worth millions of kwacha.
