“This is our moment to reclaim Malawi’s destiny,” says Mutharika

By Burnett Munthali

Former President and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has delivered a stinging critique of President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration, describing it as a “failed government” that has left Malawi grappling with economic hardship and social turmoil.

In his end-of-year address, Mutharika expressed deep concern over the state of the nation, highlighting several urgent issues, including inflation, collapsing agricultural support, youth unemployment, and a worsening hunger crisis.

Mutharika pointed out that under Chakwera’s leadership, Malawians are enduring unprecedented hardships.

Soaring Prices: He noted the unbearable cost of basic necessities, such as food and soap.

Agricultural Failure: The failure of the Affordable Inputs Program (AIP) has left many farmers without access to fertilizer and seeds, exacerbating food insecurity.

Foreign Exchange Shortages: Businesses have been crippled by the unavailability of foreign currency, while persistent fuel shortages continue to paralyze the economy.

Hunger Crisis: Many Malawians are now resorting to survival strategies, such as consuming buffalo beans and boiled mangoes, illustrating the gravity of the country’s economic decline.

Mutharika voiced particular concern for Malawi’s youth, who face high unemployment and limited opportunities. “Our young people, brimming with talent and potential, are left feeling hopeless,” he lamented.

He pledged that the DPP would focus on creating job opportunities and empowering the youth to rebuild their futures.

Beyond economic issues, Mutharika accused Chakwera’s government of undermining democracy through:

Selective Justice: Targeting opposition figures and critics.

Suppression of Free Speech: Intimidation of journalists, religious leaders, and activists.

“These actions represent a direct attack on the democracy Malawians fought so hard to achieve,” he said.

A Call to Action

Mutharika urged Malawians to rise above adversity and work toward reclaiming the country’s destiny. He emphasized the DPP’s commitment to making food affordable, supporting farmers, and championing democratic values.

“This is our moment to rise above adversity, reclaim our destiny, and chart a brighter future for Malawi,” Mutharika declared, concluding his address with a rallying call for unity and resilience.
