The Youth Alive Mchinji, has applauded the Government of Malawi under the leadership of President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera for the decisive steps being taken to address the fuel challenges in the country.

The organization says it acknowledges the ongoing negotiations with Arab countries to secure Government-to-Government fuel supply agreements saying this is a bold and commendable initiative aimed at stabilizing fuel availability.

Writing in a statement dated 11th January, 2025 signed by its Executive Director Luciano Milala, the Youth Alive Mchinji says fuel shortages have significantly impacted various sectors of the country’s economy including the livelihoods of many youth who depend on small and medium-scale enterprises for their survival.

The Youth Alive Mchinji says businesses have been severely affected by the scarcity of fuel leading to disruptions in operations and reduced incomes observing that the resumption of fuel supply will undoubtedly breathe new life into these businesses, enabling growth and improving the economic well-being of the youth.

The organization has urged President Chakwera and his administration to sustain these efforts by continuing to engage with other reliable fuel suppliers saying securing diverse and consistent sources of fuel will ensure long-term stability and prevent future shortages.

“We have full confidence in President Chakwera’s commitment to resolving this issue and steering the nation towards economic recovery,” reads the statement in part.

The Youth Alive Mchinji has called upon the MDF and the Malawi Police Service (MPS) to intensify their efforts in curbing the illegal vending of fuel observing that such activities contribute significantly to the shortages and undermine the government’s efforts to ensure equitable distribution of this critical resource urging the law enforcement agencies to work diligently in protecting the nation’s fuel.

The organization says it reaffirms its support for the government’s initiatives and pledges to collaborate in advocating for solutions that benefit all Malawians encouraging all stakeholders to join hands in supporting President Chakwera’s vision of a self-reliant and economically empowered Malawi
