The tournament is scheduled to officially kick off this Saturday, 16 May 2026, at Lozi Secondary School football ground in the central part of Nkhotakota District, with football lovers expected to gather in large numbers to witness the opening ceremony and first match of the competition.

Speaking in an interview with , Swed said the main objective behind introducing the tournament is to identify and nurture football talent among young people in the district. He explained that many talented players in rural communities fail to get exposure due to lack of opportunities and sponsorship, hence the need to create a competitive platform that can help them shine.

According to Swed, more than 25 football teams are expected to participate in the tournament, which will run for a period of three months. He added that the competition is not only about football entertainment but also about empowering young people and keeping them away from harmful activities.
“This tournament is for our youth. We want to give them hope, exposure and opportunities to grow through sports. There is a lot of talent in Nkhotakota and this competition will help uncover players who can one day play for big teams in Malawi,” said Swed.
The businessman, who is also well-known in the country for his success in commerce and entrepreneurship, further pledged that the SUWEDI CUP will become an annual event aimed at continuously promoting sports development in the area.
Swed also revealed that after successfully organizing the football competition, he plans to expand his sports investment by introducing a handball tournament in the future, a move expected to further promote sporting activities among young people in the district.

The opening fixture of the tournament will see Afana taking on Hot Killers in what is expected to be an entertaining and highly competitive encounter.
In a major boost to grassroots football, Swed has pumped in a total of K9 million for teams to compete for during the tournament, a development that has already generated excitement among players, supporters and sports stakeholders in Nkhotakota.
Sports analysts say initiatives such as the SUWEDI CUP have the potential to transform local football by creating opportunities for talented players to be scouted by elite clubs while also strengthening community participation in sports.
The launch of the tournament comes at a time when many football stakeholders in Malawi are calling for increased investment in grassroots football as a way of building the future of the game in the country.
With preparations now complete and anticipation continuing to build, all eyes will be on Lozi Secondary School ground this Saturday as Nkhotakota begins a new football journey through the SUWEDI CUP.
