MANGOCHI — The Mangochi East Youth Forum for Development has welcomed the Supreme Court of Appeal’s decision to nullify the 2025 parliamentary election in the constituency, describing the ruling as a major victory for democracy and a clear affirmation that every vote must count.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the youth grouping said the judgment had restored public confidence in Malawi’s electoral justice system and offered Mangochi East a fresh opportunity to elect a representative through a credible, transparent and peaceful process.Breaking: Supreme Court Nullifies Mangochi East Parliamentary Election
The Supreme Court, sitting as a nine-member bench led by Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda, overturned an earlier High Court ruling and nullified the September 16, 2025 parliamentary election after finding serious electoral irregularities.
According to the forum, the court’s findings—including the improper combination of polling centres and the failure by electoral officials to adequately resolve disputes—demonstrate the importance of protecting the integrity of every ballot cast.Mangochi East Residents Demand Urgent Action on Dilapidated Idrus Katuli Road
“The ruling proves that our judiciary remains a steadfast guardian of the will of the people and the rule of law,” reads part of the statement signed by the forum’s Secretary General, Abdulkarim Shuaib.
As political parties prepare for the anticipated by-election, the youth organisation has appealed to candidates, political leaders and supporters to conduct campaigns responsibly and avoid actions that could trigger violence or division.
The forum urged all contestants to prioritise peace over confrontation, stressing that elections should be fought through ideas and policies rather than intimidation or personal attacks.DPP Regional Governor Boosts Support in Mangochi North and Lutende
It further warned politicians against using young people as instruments of political violence, calling on the youth themselves to reject manipulation for partisan interests.
“We demand that political leaders refrain from exploiting young people as agents of violence, disruption or intimidation. Young people must refuse to be used to fight battles that do not serve their future,” the statement says.
The organisation also appealed for respect among supporters of different political parties, saying democracy thrives when citizens are free to hold differing political opinions without fear or hostility.
The forum believes the fresh election offers Mangochi East a unique opportunity to demonstrate democratic maturity by embracing issue-based campaigns and ensuring voters make informed choices at the ballot box.
It concluded by calling on all stakeholders to safeguard peace throughout the electoral process, expressing hope that justice, unity and democratic values will prevail in the constituency.
The Supreme Court’s decision paves the way for the Malawi Electoral Commission to organise a fresh parliamentary election in Mangochi East, with political parties expected to intensify preparations for what is likely to be a closely contested race.
