A massive crowd gathered at Zolozolo Botanic Ground in Mzuzu City North to witness the launch of the K3.5 million Honourable Leonard Njikho Trophy, a move seen as a resounding endorsement of Njikho’s candidacy in next year’s parliamentary election.
The event, which featured traditional dances performed by chiefs, elderly citizens, women, and youth, culminated in Njikho himself taking to the field to officially launch the constituency football trophy.
Speaking to journalists, Njikho, who is contesting as an independent candidate, revealed that he had accepted the recall to represent his people due to the neglect they have suffered since he left office in 2019.
“I have decided to contest on an independent ticket to ensure that I can work with everyone who prioritizes development, without being limited by party affiliations or constraints,” Njikho explained.
Group Village Headman (GVH) Kafwiri Nyirongo from Nkhorongo praised Njikho for embracing the people who were neglected after the former parliamentarian left office.
“We have been abandoned since Njikho left office, it’s the personality and his development conscious that has brought about his overwhelming support for his candidacy,” said GVH Nyirongo.
Commenting on the introduction of the Football trophy the Northern Region Football Association’s General Secretary Masiya Nyasulu commended Njikho for the initiative he said will go a long way in identify and nurturing hidden talent.
The launch of the trophy and the overwhelming support from the crowd suggest that Njikho’s candidacy has generated significant momentum, setting the stage for a competitive parliamentary election in Mzuzu City North next year.
