Let the Voice of the People Be Heard–Jumbe

Comrade jumbe’s writes

Protecting Malawi’s Democracy in the 2025 Elections”

A tree that forgets its roots will not stand in the storm.” As Malawians, we have journeyed through the storm to earn our democracy—fought for by our ancestors with sweat, sacrifice, and blood.

This democracy is not a gift from politicians but a hard-won inheritance, and it must never be strangled by greed or manipulation.

As we approach the 2025 general elections, it is upon all of us—citizens, institutions, and leaders—to ensure that the voice of the people is respected.

A free, fair, and transparent election is the only path that honors the sacrifices of our past and secures a future for our children.

However, dark clouds gather when whispers of electoral manipulation arise. “Smoke never rises without fire.”

It is troubling to hear rumors that the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has hired foreign firms to rig the upcoming elections.

In recent times, we have seen such rumors take shape—what starts as a whisper soon becomes a shout.

Since the MCP returned to power, we’ve witnessed concerning patterns.

This is a reminder that “when the hyena wants to steal, it first confuses the herd.” But we say: “No one steals from a lion’s den.”

The people of Malawi are awake, alert, and ready to defend their democracy. The MCP must not forget that they are in power today because of this very democracy.

To manipulate the 2025 elections would be to kill the same ladder that lifted them to power. Do they need a reminder?

There was a time when the MCP labeled multi-party democracy as “war,” standing in the way of progress. But “when the rain falls, it does not fall on one roof alone.”

The freedom and democracy we enjoy today belong to all Malawians, not just those in government. Let no one dare poison the well from which we all drink.

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) carries the responsibility of being a neutral referee—not a player for the ruling team.

“When the drum is struck unevenly, the dancers stumble.”

We urge the MEC to conduct the elections with integrity, for an election marred by manipulation will lead this nation toward chaos.

Similarly, the National Registration Bureau (NRB) must conduct voter registration with professionalism.

We are closely watching them. “If you cover your tracks with leaves, the wind will blow them away.”

Attempting to register ghost voters will only lead to disaster. We know it too well that Malawi is bigger than any political ambition—our allegiance is to the country, not to a political party.

We remind every political leader: elections are a sacred contract between the people and their leaders.

If that contract is broken, the people will rise. “The river may be calm, but the crocodile is always near.” Those who attempt to rob us of our democracy will face the consequences.

The peace we cherish is not the absence of action but the presence of justice. In 2025, the will of the people must be honored.

Every vote must count, and every voice must be heard. “A hunter who cheats his way to the feast will soon be left with no friends.”

The people will not tolerate the theft of their future. “If you harvest without planting, famine will follow.”

A manipulated election is a seed of anarchy, but a free and fair election plants the seed of unity and prosperity.

Let this election reflect the true will of Malawians. We owe it to those who came before us, those who stand with us, and those yet to be born.

We stand firm, knowing that “the sun will rise, no matter how long the night.” Together, we will protect our democracy and ensure that its light shines for generations to come.

My pen is mightier than a sword.
