With only a few hours remaining before the application window closes, candidates seeking leadership roles in Malawi’s UTM Party are in a last-minute rush to submit their candidacy letters. According to the party’s Administrative Secretary, Augustine Gracewell Mtendere, the deadline for submitting applications is 5 PM today.
“We will close the window at exactly 5 PM, and the office will also be closed at that time,” Mtendere confirmed, adding that the party has so far received applications from four individuals interested in the role of party leader.
Amidst speculation about potential candidates, Mtendere clarified that Michael Usi, a prominent figure within the party, has not yet submitted his application. “Usi has not filed his papers, and we are not sure if or when he plans to do so,” Mtendere stated.

As UTM gears up for its convention later this month, the spotlight remains on key contenders who have officially registered their interest. Currently, notable candidates vying for the party’s leadership include Patricia Kaliati, Dalitso Kabambe, Mathews Mtumbuka, and Newton Kambala. These figures, well-known in Malawi’s political landscape, are expected to engage in a competitive race as they each seek to steer UTM into the future.
The convention, scheduled to elect new leaders, is seen as a pivotal event that could reshape UTM’s direction. With the application deadline fast approaching, today’s closing hours will determine the final slate of candidates as UTM prepares for what could be a transformative leadership transition.
