Big Bullets clinch Airtel Top 8 title for record third time

By Burnett Munthali

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets have made history by winning the Airtel Top 8 for the third time, solidifying their dominance in Malawian football. Bullets secured a 1-0 victory against Silver Strikers in a closely contested final at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, showcasing both their resilience and strategic play.

The sole goal of the match came in the final minutes, sending Bullets’ supporters into celebration as they claimed the title for a second consecutive year, having previously won in 2021 and 2023. Head coach Kalisto Pasuwa praised his team’s determination and adherence to strategy, which he attributed to their success. He noted that after a previous loss to Silver Strikers at Kamuzu Stadium, they adjusted their defensive tactics, ultimately achieving a hard-fought victory.

Pasuwa also highlighted concerns about player safety, calling for better protection from referees after a rough tackle left key player Chrispin Mapemba injured without any disciplinary action against the offender. Pasuwa’s remarks echoed a common sentiment within the league that officials need to ensure fair play and protect players’ well-being.

Silver Strikers coach Peter Mponda, while disappointed, maintained that Bullets didn’t outshine his team strategically. Mponda attributed the loss to luck rather than a gap in skill, expressing pride in his squad’s effort and commitment throughout the tournament.

With this latest triumph, Big Bullets have set a new record in the Airtel Top 8, reinforcing their legacy as a powerhouse in Malawian football and raising the bar for future competitions.
