In a significant stride towards enhancing Malawi’s energy sector, President Lazarus Chakwera will preside over the official launch of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Kanengo Substation in Lilongwe on Monday, 25th November 2024. The ceremony, set to begin at 8:00 AM at Capital Hill, promises to be a milestone in the country’s renewable energy journey.
This innovative system, which marks a first for Malawi, aims to revolutionize the storage and distribution of electricity by providing backup power during outages, stabilizing the national grid, and supporting renewable energy integration. The initiative is a critical step in addressing the country’s longstanding energy challenges, including erratic power supply and load-shedding.
According to Colleen Zamba, Secretary to the President and Cabinet, this project underscores the government’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and fostering economic growth.
“The launch of the Battery Energy Storage System is not just about infrastructure; it’s about transforming the lives of Malawians by ensuring reliable electricity, which is essential for development,” Zamba stated in her announcement.
The Kanengo Substation, already a key hub in the country’s power distribution network, will now host this state-of-the-art storage system. The BESS is expected to support industries, businesses, and households by reducing energy disruptions and enhancing efficiency in electricity supply.
President Chakwera’s administration has placed energy sector reforms at the forefront of its development agenda, recognizing the critical role of reliable power in driving industrialization and improving living standards.
The launch will bring together government officials, energy sector stakeholders, and members of the public in what is expected to be a lively and forward-looking event. For many, this marks a turning point in Malawi’s journey towards energy security and sustainability.
