Aspiring United Transformation Movement (UTM) President, Mathews Mtumbuka, has completed a nationwide tour aimed at galvanizing support from delegates ahead of the party’s upcoming elective convention on November 17, 2024, in Mzuzu. Over the past weeks, Mtumbuka has traveled across Malawi to engage with UTM members, outline his vision, and rally for their votes as he seeks to secure the party’s top leadership position.
The tour took Mtumbuka through key regions, where he met with grassroots supporters and party delegates, positioning himself as a candidate committed to revitalizing UTM’s mission. In his campaign, Mtumbuka emphasized economic growth, anti-corruption measures, and the promotion of youth and women’s empowerment, stressing the need for decisive leadership that directly addresses the country’s pressing socio-economic challenges.
Mtumbuka’s outreach has largely focused on restoring faith within the party base, especially following recent controversies within UTM’s National Executive Committee. His message of unity and transparency has resonated with delegates looking for stability within the party ranks.
However, Mtumbuka faces formidable competition, including from established figures within UTM, making the outcome of the convention uncertain. His ability to sway the delegates will depend on whether his vision can effectively bridge the divides within UTM and gain the trust of both regional representatives and grassroots supporters.
