Authorities in Chitipa District are investigating the tragic murder of Group Village Head (GVH) Mwanyanja, real name Mapuzi Kaonga, 65, of Traditional Authority Nthalire. GVH Mwanyanja was found dead along an earth road within his village on Sunday, sparking shock and outrage among locals.
Chitipa Police spokesperson, Gladwell Simwaka, revealed that a post-mortem conducted at Nthalire Health Centre indicated the cause of death was severe blood loss resulting from multiple cuts to the head. The brutal nature of the killing has prompted police to launch a manhunt for the unidentified perpetrators.
Simwaka disclosed that the reasons behind the murder remain unclear. However, preliminary investigations suggest that the attack may be linked to accusations of witchcraft. The deceased was reportedly accused of causing a death in the village while attending a funeral the previous day.
Simwaka strongly condemned mob justice and urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, especially in cases involving unverified allegations of witchcraft. “The law will take its course on anyone involved in the killing,” Simwaka warned, emphasizing the importance of due process and evidence-based accusations.
The murder has sent shockwaves through the community, with many expressing fear and anger over the incident. Cases of mob justice tied to witchcraft allegations have been a recurring issue in some parts of Malawi, highlighting the need for greater public awareness and enforcement of the rule of law.
Police in Chitipa District are urging anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to come forward. The authorities have also called on community leaders to work with law enforcement to prevent similar incidents in the future.
GVH Mwanyanja’s death is a grim reminder of the dangers posed by unfounded accusations and mob justice. As the investigation continues, it is hoped that the perpetrators will be brought to justice, and steps will be taken to ensure the safety and dignity of all members of society.
