As the debate rages on about who wears the crown of corruption in Malawi, it’s imperative to set the record straight and defend the legacy of former President Peter Mutharika. Despite the relentless efforts by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to tarnish his image, Mutharika remains a beacon of integrity and a champion of anti-corruption efforts.
The recent write-up in nyasatimes that attempts to crown Mutharika as the most corrupt among his peers is nothing but a gross misrepresentation of facts. A closer examination of the allegations leveled against him reveals a pattern of political persecution and fabrication. The Cement Scandal, the Police Food Ration Scandal, and the allegations of public funds being diverted to fund Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) cadets are all mere fabrications designed to discredit Mutharika’s administration.
It’s essential to note that Mutharika consistently denied any direct involvement in these scandals, and there’s no concrete evidence to prove otherwise. In fact, his administration made significant strides in fighting corruption, including allocation of enough funds to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the prosecution of several high-profile corruption cases.
On the other hand, current President Lazarus Chakwera’s record on corruption is nothing short of appalling. His administration has been marred by allegations of inaction on high-profile corruption cases, including the Zuneth Sattar bribery scandal. Chakwera’s failure to decisively act against graft has eroded public trust, making him appear complicit in a growing culture of impunity.
Chakwera’s handling of the Martha Chizuma saga is a testament to his lack of commitment to fighting corruption. Chizuma, the former Director-General of the ACB, was arrested and charged with misconduct for her remarks about Chakwera’s administration. This move was widely seen as an attempt to silence her and undermine the ACB’s efforts to combat corruption.
In contrast, Mutharika’s administration was committed to transparency and accountability. He frequently reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption and took concrete steps to address the issue. It’s unfair to malign his legacy based on unsubstantiated allegations and fabrications.
Dalitso Kabambe, the former Reserve Bank Governor, is another individual who has been accused of corruption. However, his alleged wrongdoing pales in comparison to Chakwera’s egregious failure to address corruption in his administration.
In conclusion, it’s essential to set the record straight and recognize Mutharika’s commitment to fighting corruption. The allegations against him are mere fabrications designed to discredit his legacy. Chakwera, on the other hand, has proven himself to be the grand Master of corruption, hiding behind presidential immunity while allowing graft to flourish under his watch.
As we reflect on the legacy of Mutharika, it’s clear that he was a champion of anti-corruption efforts. His commitment to transparency and accountability is a testament to his integrity, and he should be remembered as a saint in the eyes of history. On the other hand, Chakwera’s record on corruption is a transparent reminder of his administration’s failures and his own complicity in the growing culture of impunity. He is, without a doubt, the grand master of corruption in Malawi.
