DPP fires back at MCP, accuses ruling party of human rights abuses and economic mismanagement

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has issued a scathing response to allegations made by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson Jessie Kabwila, accusing the ruling party of human rights abuses, economic mismanagement, and suppression of basic freedoms.

In a statement released on January 22, 2025, DPP National Publicity Secretary and Party Spokesperson Shadric Namalomba MP denied Kabwila’s allegations of exploitation and coercion against DPP presidential candidate Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

“The allegations made by Kabwila are baseless and misleading,” Namalomba said. “Professor Mutharika’s candidacy represents his unwavering dedication to serving the people of Malawi and the overwhelming support he continues to receive across the country.”

The DPP statement highlighted several critical issues that demand attention, including rampant poverty and hunger, healthcare emergencies, economic turmoil, suppression of basic freedoms, and erosion of law and order.

“The severe shortage of essential food supplies continues to jeopardize the livelihoods of the Malawian people,” the statement read. “Public hospitals in Malawi are facing alarming shortages of medicines and vital medical resources, putting lives at risk and violating the fundamental right to proper healthcare.”

The DPP also accused the MCP of suppressing basic freedoms, including the right to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly. “There has been a rise in reports of individuals facing harassment for expressing dissent, and peaceful demonstrations being violently dispersed – a direct violation of the democratic values that should govern our nation.”

Furthermore, the DPP criticized the MCP for the erosion of law and order, citing the unchecked power of MCP cadres and the undermining of the Malawi Police Service.

In light of these pressing issues, the DPP urged the MCP to direct its attention to addressing the multiple crises plaguing the people of Malawi. “Instead of deflecting the conversation with baseless accusations, the MCP should prioritize the urgent needs of citizens, restore dignity through effective governance, and stop evading responsibility by resorting to scapegoating tactics.”

The DPP remains committed to advocating for a Malawi where rights and freedoms are respected, the economy is robust, and the voice of every Malawian is heard and valued.

“We continue to stand ready to serve with integrity and a genuine commitment to the nation’s progress,” Namalomba said.

The development comes as Malawi prepares for the 2025 General Elections, with the DPP and MCP expected to be major contenders.
