Parliament on Wednesday passed the 2025-2026 proposed budget pegged at K8,076 trillion and out of this figure, K67.3 billion has been allocated to State House alone, a development which has made many Malawians to question the usage of this money at the State House.

The passing of the 2025-2026 budget has come at a time that Malawi is preparing to hold the much-anticipated General Elections slated on the 16th September, 2025 and many Malawians have concluded that this a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) campaign budget not for the country.

Many Malawians following social media have expressed doubts as to whether the budget will be used for the intended purposes looking at the party’s history from June, 2020 where it has been proved as the most wasteful in government than any other government Malawians have ever had since the dawn of multiparty politics and democracy in 1994.

Speaking after the budget was passed amid strong protests from patriotic parliamentarians, Member of Parliament for Blantyre City South East Constituency Sameer Suleman, said this cohort of parliamentarians from opposition parties, have not helped Malawians.

Suleman said greed is what has destroyed the opposition party parliamentarians that when they entered Parliament, they forgotten that they are servant of their constituents and started serving themselves, their families, friends and relatives.

He said it is sad that a total of K67.3 billion has gone to one person at the State House to eat with his children and grandchildren saying he for one, is apologizing to all Malawians that as MPs from the opposition side, they have not been helpful to Malawians.

The parliamentarian protested heavily in Parliament proposing the slash of the State House budget from K67.3 trillion to K20 billion so that the money saved could go towards procuring maize to ADMARC Markets to bail out Malawians from hunger, pain and anger saying all this, have failed claiming that Parliament is about figures.

“We have only 5 months to go to the 16th September, 2025 elections, why allocating K67.3 billion to be enjoyed by the President and his family members while Malawians out there are starving?” questions Suleman.

Writing on his face book page, social commentator Bashir Al Bashir, has questioned patriotic Malawians that what is it that State House needs K190 million per day in a country where millions of Malawians are sleeping with empty stomachs and have no hope for a better tomorrow?

“In simple calculations K67.3 billion per year, K5.7 million per month and K190 million per day,” reads his writings on the wall.

Meanwhile, social media forums have been flooded with a list of 21 parliamentarians from the opposition benches in Parliament who rejected a proposal to slash down State House budget for procuring maize in ADMARC markets with a call to their constituencies that enough is enough with them and they should not bounce back into the National Assembly on 16th September, 2025 elections
