The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) has announced the successful completion of maintenance work carried out at Nkula Power Station during the Easter holidays, starting from 22:00 hours on Thursday, 17 April 2025.

The maintenance was crucial to the optimal performance of the power station. It involved demolishing a wall of concrete piles at Nkula A intake, which had been hindering power generation operations. This was a necessary intervention to ensure that the power generation systems could operate without obstruction.

Additionally, maintenance was carried out on a bypass valve on machine number 4 at Nkula B powerhouse. This work was part of a broader effort to maintain and ensure the continued functionality of the power generation machines and their associated components.

As of 17:36 hours on Monday, 21 April 2025, the first machine at Nkula Power Station was successfully brought back online. This marked a significant milestone in the maintenance process, with further machines scheduled to follow immediately.

At the time of the latest update, six of the eight machines at Nkula Power Station were back online, with work continuing to bring the remaining machines back into operation. This ongoing effort reflects EGENCO’s commitment to ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply for Malawi.

The completion of these maintenance activities is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of the power station, contributing to the overall energy stability in the country. As the remaining machines come online, the generation capacity of Nkula Power Station will continue to strengthen, benefiting both domestic consumers and industries reliant on consistent power supply.

This successful maintenance work highlights EGENCO’s dedication to maintaining the infrastructure that powers Malawi and its proactive approach to addressing any issues that may arise in the power generation process. The company’s efforts are crucial in supporting the country’s economic growth and development, providing a steady and dependable power supply to meet the growing demand for electricity.

EGENCO’s continuous improvements and maintenance projects at power stations like Nkula ensure that the country remains on track in meeting its energy needs, even during peak seasons like the Easter holidays when maintenance could cause significant disruptions. The work undertaken at Nkula Power Station reflects EGENCO’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing its facilities to serve the people of Malawi.
