MISA Malawi Chairperson Golden Matonga on Saturday led the media fraternity in honouring the late Martin Chiwanda, who was a journalist working with Malawi News Agency as District Information Officer for Machinga.
Prior to his opening remarks during the MISA Malawi Annual Media Awards Gala being held at Grand Palace Hotel in Mzuzu, Matonga asked the members to stand and honour Chiwanda with a minute of silence.
“It is a sad day in the media fraternity as just this (saturday) morning, we have lost one of our own Martin Chiwanda, who was a journalist working as District Information Officer in Machinga.
“For that, let us all stand and observe one minute silence in honour of Martin. May his soul rest in peace,” said Matonga.
Chiwanda died at the age of 41.
Matonga also paid respect to other fallen media personnel who died within the year.
These are Chikondi Phikiso and Hellen Kaira, whom he said passed on while at the height of their careers, and veterans Willie Zingani and Lucius Chikuni who he said have mentored many journalists and played a vital role in the development of journalism in the country.
